As history has it, John Cresson, the cities namesake, visited this area with a wagon train prior to the Civil War. Years later, he returned to open a General Store which became a stagecoach hub with routes connecting Waco, Cleburne, Granbury and Stephenville. When the railroad came through the region, stagecoach lines became obsolete. In 1887, The Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railroad connected Cresson with Granbury. That same year, Cresson was granted a Post Office. Cressons population at this time was around 35. In 1896, Cressons population increased to an even 100 people.
The Cresson School displays an Historical Marker providing a brief insight into years past. In the late 1880s, land was deeded for school purposes. As in many rural communities, school programs began in a one room schoolhouse. Over the years, the school underwent several renovations. After Cresson consolidated with Granbury schools in the mid sixties, the Cresson School closed and a Historical Marker was erected in 1967.
